“Don’t be gentle, it’s a rental.” Actually, the vast majority of our customers prefer vehicles with efficient, low-polluting engines that don’t guzzle gas. In fact, we have found that in the last year or so, car rental customers prefer vehicles that are easy on the gas.
With Earthy Day fast approaching, on 22 April 2020, we are looking at what are some of the ‘greener’ rental cars in Toronto.
Fuel efficient models in 2020
Cars today are noticeably heavier than they were even 5 or 10 years ago. Why? Because modern cars come with a raft of safety features, stronger body shells and hybrid technologies that add to the weight of the car. Despite that 2019 and 2020 model cars have lower emissions and offer improved fuel economy!
It’s why at Advantage Car Rental we invest in new cars: our customers love them and so do their wallets.
Fuel efficient rental cars in Toronto
If you are looking for eco-friendly cars then this is the list for you. These cars will emit fewer carbon by-products as you drive, reducing your carbon footprint. Note that you may not find all of these cars at a car rental desk. Fast rotating inventories and evolving technologies mean there are different ways of achieving eco-friendly driving. Confused? Read on.
Toyota Prius
The Prius name is synonymous with eco-driving. It was around the late 2000s that Toyota broke through the 50mpg mark (less than 5 l/100km) and they haven’t looked back since. The Prius has become more/less gawky with its latest refresh – depending on your tastes.
It’s not just what you drive, but how you drive it that makes the biggest difference to fuel economy.
Honda Civic
Honda’s 2020 Civic really ups the efficiency quotient with a gutsy engine that can sip fuel when you want it to. A CVT gearbox makes this sedan one of the most efficient highway cruisers. In fact, that’s one area where it beats the Prius, which offers below average highway gas mileage.
Toyota Camry Hybrid
The Camry Hybrid dominates the executive sedan space for eco-minded motoring. Exceedingly comfortable, spacious and efficient, this car capitalizes on Toyota’s excellent hybrid powertrain and interior packaging.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Oh how everyone laughed when Mitsubishi revealed the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. But it proved all its detractors hopelessly wrong! This plug-in hybrid naturally cannot match the efficiency of the Prius, but it is leagues ahead of traditional SUVs. Ideal, if you need huge carrying capacity but without the petro-guilt.
Kia Sorento
Really, a 7-seater large SUV can be fuel efficient too. Instead of two vehicles, if your entire group travels in one car, that’s an enormous fuel saving. The Sorento offers a plethora of eco-driving options too.
Want to rent a hybrid vehicle for your next trip? Speak to your Toronto car rental desk once you have made the booking and we will try our best to accommodate your request. That said, it is not always possible for us to provide an electric or hybrid vehicle due to scheduling issues.
